Debbie DanowskiThe author of four popular books, a freelance writer for over 20 years, an associate professor of Media Studies at Sacred Heart University, and a nationally renowned weight loss expert, Debbie Danowski, Ph.D. has made a career out of educating people about weight loss and food addiction.

In her book, Why Can’t I Stop Eating?, (Hazelden 2000) co-authored with Dr. Pedro Lazaro, Debbie outlines the complete food addiction recovery program including emotional healing techniques that resulted in her losing 175 pounds over 15 years ago. A regular guest on both U.S. and Canadian radio stations, Debbie vigorously promoted her book which resulted in Why Can’t I Stop Eating? being the best selling trade book at Hazelden.

Debbie's second book, Locked Up For Eating Too Much (Hazelden 2002) resulted in her being invited to appear on the FOX news show, The O’Reilly Factor where she discussed the concept of emotional eating. The story of her six-week stay in a food addiction treatment center, the book takes readers on an emotionally charged journey from despair to recovery.

The Overeater’s Journal Exercises for Heart, Mind, and Soul (Hazelden 2004), Debbie's third book, was released in April. Containing approximately 180 journal-writing exercises, this book will help readers to deal with overeating by using writing. Invited by her publisher to write this book, Debbie is enthusiastically promoting her newest publication.

In her fourth book, The Emotional Eater's Book of Inspiration: 90 Truths You Need To Know To Overcome Your Food Addiction (Avalon/Marlowe 2007), Debbie provides a 90-day program to stop the food lies that food addicts tell themselves. The book is endorsed by actress Jayne Atkinson who recently played Karen Hayes on the hit FOX television show 24 and includes a forward from Phil Werdell, co-founder of the Food Addiction Institute.

Additionally, Debbie has written more than 100 articles for national and local publications, including First For Women, Woman’s Day and Seventeen Magazine. She has also spoken at countless meetings, seminars and conferences about weight loss and food addiction, including Food Addiction 2000, the first national conference held on the disease. Currently, she is offering workshops both online and regionally which have garnered widespread interest.

Debbie was employed by the food addiction unit of a national treatment center to educate mental health professionals about food addiction recovery. She is also the advisor to the student newspaper, and a member of the University’s Eating Disorders Awareness Team. Debbie holds a Ph.D. from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she researched eating behavior in American film.
